The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA), which belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), leads RECOPPs and is located in Barcelona, Spain.

IDAEA coordinates RECOPPs and carries out part of the research within this project. Dr. Patricia Córdoba Sola is the principal investigator and coordinator of RECOPPs.


  • Design the overview of the final technology solution and coordination of the development of the project.
  • Develop the recovery protocol of the added-value Bismuth (Bi) from ESP converter dust, a by-product generated during the primary production of Copper (Cu), along with the stabilization of the hazardous Arsenic (As) at a technology readiness level (TRL) of 5.
  • Transition of the technological solution to a TRL 7-8 (industrial scale).
  • Provide training and technology transfer towards early-stage scientist (PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) and MSc students and establish a joint domain for such actions among partners and collaborating research institutions.
  • Communicate and disseminate RECOPPs commitment to transition into circular economy and sustainable industry.

Located in Barcelona, Spain, the Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona is a public institution of research and higher education specialized in the fields of science, engineering, architecture and technology, making it one the leading technical universities in Europe.


  • Develop the recovery protocol of the added-value Bismuth (Bi) and Antimony (Sb) from the eluate, generated during the electrolyte purification Ion-exchange stage, both currently at a TRL of 5, to validate this technological solution at such operational environment.
  • Transition of the technological solution to a TRL 7-8 (industrial scale).
  • Provide training and technology transfer towards early-stage scientist (PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) and MSc students and establish a joint domain for such actions among partners and collaborating research institutions.

Atlantic Copper, located in Huelva, Spain, is one the most important copper smelting companies in Europe. Belonging to Freeport-McMornan group (US), Atlantic Copper specializes in the production of high-grade refined copper from ore mined in various parts of the world. As a relevant industrial partner, we will ensures the adequate evaluation of the developed solution, presented by RECOPPs.


  • Enable the reaserchers to study in detail our pyrometallurgical process fror the primary production of Copper.
  • Carry out a number of samplying campaigns of the effluents, residues and by-products generated during the copper production process, under specific operating conditions.
  • Facilitate all kind of relevant information for the efficient performance of RECOPPs and contribute with the consortium’s technical team, which will assess the implementation options, as well as contributing in the validation of the upscailing technology.

Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals, located in Gliwice, Poland, is the largest non-ferrous metals institute in the world of a unique character due to the wide and complex scale of the research conducted. Along with Atlantic Copper we will evaluate the first operating version of RECOPPs.


  • Develop a stabilisation protocol for the hazardous Arsenic (As) from the by-products, once added-value raw materials have already been recovered.
  • Constant testing to evaluate the strengths of the technological solution and identify conditions that should be adjusted.
  • Continuos piloting and maintenance to prevent large-scale failures and to minimize downtime.
  • Provide data needed to adjust the process to the characteristics of the effluents, residues and by-products at the Huelva smelter, as well as the engineering data.

Located in Manresa, Spain, We help companies discover new opportunities and participate in creating and improving products, services, processes and business models with an impact on their competitiveness and social wellbeing.

Our role in RECOPPs will focus on conveying a Life Cycle Analysis that will evaluate the environmental benefits of the processes developed by RECOPPs.


  • Benefits for the new Circular Economy approaches. Setting the environmental benefits and drawbacks provided by the RECOPP strategies
  •  Support the continuous process improvement (identification and mitigation of environmental hot spots following Eco-design principles).

We are sure that RECOPPs will have a positive environmental impact among which is the CRM recovery from current residual streams and reduction of mining tails dumped to landfill.
